POPULIS relies on the rich information provided
by
administrative databases; the basic databases used are available in most
Canadian provinces, many U.S. states, and in most European countries.
Manitoba’s database documents every contact that the population has with the
health care system. This figure presents a view of an ideal administrative database with a population-based research registry playing a central role. The registry contains a unique but non-identifying research number that is assigned to each provincial resident, together with information about demographic characteristics, residence and family composition. The other files use the same number to track use of services, making it possible to compile comprehensive histories for individuals over time. |
