What Do Engineers do?

The definition of an engineer is different for everyone. The dictionary defines an engineer as a person who designs, builds, or maintains engines, machines, or public works. This implies engineers can hold careers such as:

  1. Research Postitions
  2. Consultation
  3. Construction
  4. Auto-Indsutry
  5. Electrical
  6. Software Developemnt/Computer Programming

This definition is rather accurate but i believe there is more to being an egineer. There is something special about being an engineering, something more important that makes the work of engineers valuable, significant.

During one lecture after our first exam. Dr. Budny was in the process of yelling ranting about our lacking potential as future engineers. During this, however, he made the statement "Engineers, we are the designers of the future," and began to stress why the work we do as engineers is so so important.

This statement and some of what Budny spoke about afterwards truly hit me. Engineers have a responsilbity to society to design and work towards a better future, to fix the problems with technology and society in order to secure a better life for later genertations.

BioEngineering

Bioengineering, aka Biomedical Engineering is an extremely broad degree that covers many different biological processes and engineering principles. Many bioengineers end up in research but other jobs include

  1. Design
  2. Healthcare
  3. Mechanical (prosthetics)
  4. Professsors
  5. Government: EPA, environmental regulation, etc.

Some recent bioengineering breakthroughs invovle the isolation of infectious diseases and the improvement of drug delivery systems. By developing more efficient real-time Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction techiques and apparatuses for these teechniques, researchers are able to better isolate and determine where certain diseases originate. Then, they take this information, and work with other engineers to try to desgin new technology that deliverys the drugs directly to the affected area, with less side-effects and more efficiency.
