Technology and Higher Education

Dr. Pack is the University representative to EDUCAUSE, the Coalition for Networked Information, and the National Learning Infrastructure Initiative. He founded the Learning Technology Consortium, a group of nine universities that meet regularly to share best practices in this area and to develop common approaches. Dr. Pack was instrumental in the establishment within the University of the Center for Instructional Development and Distance Education (CIDDE), which provides an extensive array of services to faculty to assist them in developing more effective approaches to instruction.

From 1998 to 1999 Dr. Pack served as interim Director of Computing and Information Services, during which time he coordinated strategic information technology planning and budgeting within the University. In that capacity, he led the effort to prepare the University's IT Master Plan. Dr. Pack speaks frequently on the issue of the changes in higher education that result from the growing impact of technology.

Dr. Pack chaired the university-wide CERMIS Committee, which recommended the implementation of the newly instituted portal my.pitt.edu, and proposed the establishment of the student information data warehouse. He now serves as Project Director for PeopleSoft Student Administration System Implementation. For information on this project, click here.

Dr. Pack is a member of the Pitt-UPMC Joint Policy Advisory Committee on Network Security.  He also serves as the University's Privacy Officer to ensure compliance with the HIPAA regulations regarding medial records.
