Picture of Barbara HamblyBarbara Hambly was attracted to fantasy at an early age, beginning with "The Wizard of Oz" and going on to the classic Tolkien works. Anyone who pays attention to Ms. Hambly's writing is likely to find references to any number of literary pieces and pop culture icons, including "Mary Poppins," "The Phantom of the Opera," and The Beatles.

Her fantasy book series include The Darwath Trilogy, the stories of Sun Wolf and Starhawk (a trilogy that I really enjoyed), and Winterlands. She has also written vampire novels (the James Asher series) and short stories, Star Wars and Star Trek novels, and branched into mystery novels with her Benjamin January series.

Ms. Hambly holds an M.A. in Medieval History. She has also been active in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) and martial arts. She draws upon this background to paint very real settings for the stories she writes, whether they are set in the Industrial Revolution, Renaissance Europe, or 19th Century Louisiana.
