Terry Brooks began writing during his high school days, but it was not until college and his reading of Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" that he found the genre he was meant to write. Thus was born the Shannara series, consisting of 14 books with more on the way.
I have not read the Shannara books; the Terry Brooks series that captured me was his The Word and the Void series. These novels follow a young girl who has to deal with magic and demons in a world that is, well, ours!
