Taiwan was a high-prevalent endemic area of HAV
infection with 95 % of population having been infected with HAV under the age of 15
years before the year 1981. In 1989, the infection rate of the age group of 15 years
dropped to 33 % and that of 13 years to 15 % in western plain region of
Taiwan, however, that of mountain region in eastern and central Taiwan
remained as high as in 1981 with 85 ~ 90 % infection rate in age group of 7 ~ 14 years.
During those 8 years after 1981, the environmental sanitation in
western plain region of Taiwan had showed remarkable improvement, while the
eastern mountain region had remained in the same poor condition. It has been proven that good environmental sanitation and
individual hygienic habit would improve and eradicate the infection of
HAV. |
